Synchronous communication tools

Synchronous communication tools (e.g. chat, video, conference) stimulate a ‘real’ conversation with immediate interaction among the participants. In a chatroom, for example, everyone is online and students communicate with each other at the same moment.

The benefit of synchronous collaborative learning is the ‘proximity’ of your students: the interaction is almost as smooth as a face-to-face conversation.

The disadvantages are:

  • lack of flexibility. Everyone should be online at the same time.
  • the high speed of information distribution, this requires a direct information exchange which can be very stressful for your students.
