Asynchronous communication tools

These tools (e.g. a discussion forum, wiki, blog, social networks) allow you to work together regardless of time or place. There is a delay between the messages. For example, a student posts a message on the discussion forum, the other students can read this message on different times but also read it multiple times and comment only after that .

The benefits of using asynchronous communication tools are:

  • great flexibility. Your students can participate in discussions/group works when they are ready for it (practically and regarding to content).
  • your students do not have to be online at the same time.
  • your students experience less pressure to immediately respond to the information present. They have time to process the information, to reflect on this and to formulate a solid answer afterwards.

However, asynchronous collaborative learning can also lead to a lower responsiveness: the discussion or the collaborative learning can (sometimes) lead to a lot of delay, with a risk of losing the ‘drive’.
