Provide technical support

When offering (part of) the learning material that your student needs to go through digitally (e.g. a movie to watch, an interactive exercise, etc.), you should provide enough technical support, for example by providing a communication medium where your student can ask questions.

As an e-coach, you do not only have a content and social related role but also a technical-organisational role.

Good technical support can be organized in advance :

Provide all computer related information in advance.

Example: How to log in, how do the functionalities work, what can you test before taking part in a webinar, …

Provide a procedure for ‘technical problems’

This can relate to an email address, a web form, a group of people who are ‘online’in turns, etc.,…

Create realistic expectations about the responsiveness of the teacher. This should be done before the implementation and actual start of the course.

How can you be helped yourself?

It is of course convenient if you know the used tools and environment well yourself. If this is not the case, then it is important that you get sufficient support yourself. What can help is …

Test your tools

  • For example : provide an extra account so you can test things as they are perceived by your student
  • Test the functionalities that you want to use during the following (online) moment of contact with a ‘sparring partner’,…

Boxer

Provide an emergency line that you 'master' completely, and make sure the students are familiar with it.

For example : an email address or phone number

Ask ‘experts’ to be standby when you do your first experiments, or make arrangements about how you can contact them for questions and problems that can arise

You could possibly ask them as ‘sparring partner’ to test the functionalities in your teaching scenario.

Leave the technical support, during an online moment of contact, to someone else

As a novice online trainer, it is even better to provide the technical support together with a colleague/trainer. In this way you are certain you have a technical assistant you can count on, and thus you can focus on the content and social support during the moments of contact.
