Reflect before you start!

You yourself are an important contextual factor. So, ask yourself the following questions: What is your own experience with ICT tools and how motivated are you? Put your own profile chart together before you start developing digital learning materials. To do this you can use the table below. Based on your profile, you will receive tips on how to go through this process.

Indicate where you find yourself in terms of your knowledge, use of digital tools, and motivation to use them. Red (-): little or no knowledge/use and motivation; Orange (+/-): average knowledge/use and motivation; Green (+): high knowledge/use and motivation.

Here comes the table of concerns

The reluctant critic (red-red)

Use of digital tools? Limited ICT knowledge.
Motivation in relation to digital tools? Negative motivation, does not believe in the potential of digital learning of their own teaching practice.
What is the bottleneck? Negative attitude towards digital learning fed by a limited knowledge about digital applications and less powerful examples.
What is required? Formulate an opinion about the added value of this training after completing each module. Ask yourself why this module is not sufficient for you and which aspect of it does not apply. Look closely at the practical examples and compare their context with your own. Is this comparable? Are there similar challenges? If you are convinced of one module, pick out one or two known tools to experiment with, and also start small.

The blank page (red-orange)

Use of digital tools? Limited ICT knowledge
Motivation in relation to digital tools? Not defined. Superficial knowledge of digital applications and its effects on education.
What is the pitfall? Lack of knowledge about the power of digital learning for their own teaching practice and the learning process of students.
Wat is required? Focus especially on the practical examples, look at the effects of these examples on the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching practice of the teacher. Also start small, choose one or two known tools to experiment with.

The unwanted limited (red-green)

Use of digital tools? None
Motivation in relation to digital tools? Positive, wants to participate
Where is the pitfall? Can not go online by certain conditions.
What is required? Special adaptations, money / subsidy, sometimes it is impossible.

The discouraged drop-out (orange-red)

Use of digital tools? Not anymore
Motivation in relation to digital tools? May still be positive but also negative due to bad experience (s)
Where is the pitfall? Often the complexity is proven to be too large, and / or lack of necessity
What is required? Renewed motivation and courage, a lot of patience, one-on-one assistance, optimizes usability to minimize the risk of errors

The content traditionalist (orange-orange)

Use of digital tools? Little or not at all
Motivation in relation to digital tools? Not a determining factor, but it can be positive or negative
Where is the pitfall? Benefit is too low perceived
What is required? Practical use in line with personal preferences and providing benefits, acceptance that a particular group does not want

The cautious benevolent (orange-green)

Use of digital tools? Not at all or barely
Motivation in relation to digital tools? Positive, and wants to
Where is the problem? No help, little initiative, little stimulation from the outside
What is required? Needs help or a nudge to start and move forward

The surfing classroom learner (green-red)

Use of digital tools? Yes, on a daily basis
Motivation in relation to digital tools? Is motivated to use the internet in general, but not to learn from it
Where is the pitfall? Is not convinced of the digital aspect of his learning process
What is required? Demonstrate added value regarding digital tools and the Internet (based on studies, examples, …) Personal support with digital tasks (demonstrating why this task can be done better / more efficient / … online), monitoring and discussing “successful experiences” (eg. progress mapping and discuss with the student)

The selective small consumers (green-orange)

Use of digital tools? Yes, but limited
Motivation in relation to digital tools? Neutral, they can’t do much with it
Where is the pitfall? Little drive to do more with digital learning, uses only what is strictly necessary,  and does not like it
What is required? Personal assistance, user friendly, demonstrate / illustrate benefits (what’s in it for me)

The persevering slogger (green-green)

Use of digital tools? Yes, but difficult
Motivation in relation to digital tools? Positive, is willing to
Where is the pitfall? Not able to figure it out, it does not work, make mistakes, no talent and sense for digital learning, do not understand it, it is too difficult
What is required? A lot of patience and personal help, repetition, usability (user friendly) of control systems, software and digital offer. Possibility to enable a preliminary stage to let them be familiar with digital learning
