Which general competences do you need as an (e-) coach?

It is important that an (e-) coach activates and encourages the learning attitude of the student, that the e-coach brings out the best in the student. A good coach (face-to-face or an e-coach) should have a bunch of personal qualities and competences at his disposal to achieve this goal.

General qualities of the coach. The coach should be abe to:

– listen actively and attentively.

– create a sense of freedom and security

– be able to empathize with the way of thinking and the social environment of the student.

– accept the personal characteristics and learning style of the coached student

– enthuse, inspire, and activate the student

– make the learning process exciting and attractive

– have a helicopter view

– keep the balance between the present, the past, and the future

– radiate and give confidence

– be honest

– be able to respond casually, relaxed and with humor

– treat the student with respect

– try to be careful

– be authentic, real (display a behavior that is in line with his or her personality).

General competences of the coach. The coach is able to:

– start the learning process By asking the right questions

– express himself well, so that thoughts and ideas are being clearly explained to the student

– give the starting student appropriate reference books

– based on predetermined guidelines observe the behavior of the beginning student

– ask the right question so that the beginning student is supported in his reflection process

– give feedback according to the guidelines

– give support and trust

– confront the coached student in a safe manner with his/her conflicting expressions or ask the coached student about his resistance
