These tools support self-study and reflection by practicing knowledge and applying knowledge.

The tools used for this are often test tools (see above, formative tests), where the score is totally subordinate and providing feedback to the student plays an essential role.

Digital test / exercise programs have greatly improved in recent years and offer a variety of question types. It is important that the question type matches the type of knowledge you want to test. Because of the wide variety of question types, it is possible to also practice complex cognitive skills (analysis, synthesis, evaluation).

Exercise programs distinguish themselves in terms of feedback opportunities. Good programs give immediate feedback on each answer (right or wrong), allow multiple attempts, and can give the student customized hints (tips). These hints and feedback text must then be provided by the author, what makes developing good training material very time consuming.

A new, popular exercise tool is gamification. This concerns educational computer games or so-called serious games. Games have the same characteristics, advantages and disadvantages as (model-driven) simulations (see above), surmounted by a game element, which makes learning more fun.
